The flare's purpose is to burn all flammable gases released from pressure vessels, thus avoiding their release into the atmosphere. However, a flare is only the terminal section of a blow-down system, which must be designed for the reasonably predictable worst-case emissions scenario. The emissions, thermal radiation, odours and noise associated with flaring should also be taken into account and minimized. Furthermore, several studies indicate that, in certain circumstances, flares did not burn waste gas as efficiently as previously believed. This was specifically the case with low gas flow rates and high winds. With thermal efficiency rates as low as 70% flares might release an amount of pollutants with potentially harmful effects on human and animal health, crops, forests, soil and water resources. This is why the flare system of any Plant requires an accurate and detailed analysis to avoid negatively impacting health and the environment and the risk of production shut-down. Energeco can develop optimized studies of the entire flare and blow-down system, based on our experience and with the support of updated commercial SW.
